OBD
OBD [1] (On-Board Diagnostics) tuning offers a streamlined approach, prioritizing speed and safety. Seamless OBD tuning offers numerous advantages. It is one of the most popular methods due to the easiness of use, that allows you to connect to the car without removing the unit, making it ideal for custom remaps, stage upgrades, and emissions solutions. We understand that for tuning business it’s important to ensure a quick turnover of customers without compromising on the reliability. This method allows for quick and efficient enhancements to engine efficiency and responsiveness. However, it's important to acknowledge the limitations of OBD. Coverage may be restricted for certain ECUs, and some may have the gateway blocking communication issues. With the advanced security layers of some major ECUs, for example Bosch MG1 for BMW 2020+, it leaves little to no room for OBD solutions to be developed for such platforms.
BENCH
Perhaps one of the most popular methods with our customers is Bench. It involves working directly with the ECU, granting more extensive modification capabilities. You can do it by directly accessing the ECU in the engine bay or sometimes it’s required to physically remove it from the vehicle. [2] One of the advantages of bench method over OBD is the higher recovery chances.
Whether you're working on BMW MDG1, Mercedes MG1, or VAG Bosch ECUs, our specialized Bench cables facilitate a seamless connection. The advantages are clear: more complete access to ECU data,[3] reading of all maps (including locked or encrypted areas), and a safe, non-destructive connection that eliminates the need to open the ECU, minimizing hardware risks. And lastly, did you know that Bench R/W times are always faster than OBD? You may think “Yes, there are VRs available with OBD”, but can VR be compared with a real read?
BOOT
And last but not least, is the king of the most complex methods – BOOT. When there is no protocol available via Bench or OBD, you may gain the access to the ECU by physically opening it (outside of the vehicle, of course). The tuning world before 2010s was heavily relying on BOOT as other methods weren’t available. Yet even now in 2025 it still remains as on the most reliable ways to read and write ECUs although requiring more advanced skills and patience to connect all the right pins and cables. Frequently utilized for recovery or unlocking procedures, BOOT mode empowers deep-level ECU control. As preferred by some advanced tuners[4] , this method allows to bypasses some of the security protocols[5] (don’t get too excited here, Bosch MG1 for BMW 2020+ or Mercedes MD1/ still can’t be accessed without Unlocks). providing complete command over firmware, cloning, and recovery. Boot Mode is the perfect solution for heavily encrypted ECUs and restoration projects. While powerful, Boot Mode is reserved for advanced users who require ultimate control over an ECU.[6]
Fact #2: Some of our customers work exclusively with Bench or BOOT protocols due to safety concerns of OBD protocols. At the end of the day, it is all about what you prefer and what needs you have for X or Y ECU.
Choosing the Right Tool: Master vs. Slave
As we all know, tuning world requires a tool to be either Master or Slave. The biggest difference is the encryption of files as Slaves cannot access the data but rather have to pass the file to Master for modification and further writing to ECU/TCU. Here we explain Master and Slave tools in detail, and how one can cater to the specific requirements and needs of yours, the business model you employ in your center or network, and your desired level of control over tuning files.
Master Tool:
The Master tool grants full control over the tuning process, enabling the creation of new tuning files. Master tools are versatile and offer a broad range of functionalities. Some advantages include: access to ECU files in their raw, unencrypted format, the freedom to edit parameters like fuel maps, ignition timing, and boost control and the independence to work directly with tuning software or third-party file providers. Master tools are best suited for experienced tuners who demand complete control over custom remaps or those that do not want to be linked to a single File Service and prefer to have a freedom of choice.
Slave Tool:
The Slave tool functions primarily as an executor, capable of loading and executing files created by Master tools. While more limited in file creation, Slave tools play a crucial role in collaborative tuning operations. A Slave tool is designed for tuners who prefer working with a file provider or tuning company. The ECU file is encrypted and must be sent to the Master tool owner for modification. Key differences with Master device include: reading ECU files in an encrypted format; no self-editing capabilities[7] (requiring files to be sent to a Master for modification). However, on a bright side, it has a lower cost, making it a more affordable option for entry-level tuners or those who prefer working with Masters for tuning files supply.
What is included in bFlash subscription?
Please, not that operating a bFlash Master or Slave device requires an active subscription. The subscription ensures access to the latest updates, comprehensive technical support and continuous improvements to usability and features of the tool. bFlash offers flexible subscription durations to accommodate diverse needs: 1 Month (€79.00), 3 Months (€175.00), 6 Months (€330.00), and 12 Months (€600.00). Renewing your subscription before expiry extends your current term, while renewing after expiry starts a new term from the purchase date.

How does the Mercedes ECU Unlock process work?
Purchase the ECU Unlock Service: select and purchase the appropriate unlock package for your engine type from the bFlash website. Attention: the automatic check is performed during checkout process for ECU compatibility with unlocks.
Send the ECU to HQ in Belgium: Ship your ECU to the bFlash Unlock Center in Willebroek, Belgium. Ensure the ECU is well-protected during transit, and include a return shipping label.
Unlock Procedure: Upon receipt, bFlash engineers will inspect and perform the unlock procedure, and typically we post unlocked ECU within 24-48 hours.
Reprogramming: Once you receive the ECU, you can program it using the bFlash OBD protocol. If you have only the ECU, bFlash provides schematics to facilitate programming directly from the ECU connector.

● Mercedes ECU Unlock availability: This service is exclusively for bFlash tool users. Ensure you have a bFlash device, as no other tool has an OBD protocol available.
